I realize its not sugaring off season yet but as a newly relocated Montrealer you need to know about a specatacular sugar shack that gets booked out months in advance. Its the Pied de Cochon cabane à sucre. You may know the Pied de cochon restaurant in Montreal (and if you don't ... you do now so go!) The Chef, Martin Picard has brought his signature "over-the-topness" (foie gras poutine anyone?) to the lowly cabane à sucre. With his trademark enthusiasm and infamous gluttony he has managed to create a cabane à sucre that is actually spectacularly delicious while staying true to the tradition of the mainstay dishes you find everywhere. Just book it and thank me later! http://cabaneasucreaupieddecochon.com/index_e
With the holiday season over and nothing but endless weeks of winter white ahead, its normal to feel a little grumpy. This is the time of year when Montrealers become their resourceful selves and make the best of it. If you are open to trying new things (and as an expat - you clearly are!) then you will soon realize that winter does not at all have to mean boring weekends or endless time indoors. Au contraire!
Whether its skiing at any of the many nearby mountains, skating on Beaver Lake, cross-country skiing on the mountain, snow-shoeing on the mountain, ice-fishing, snow-mobiling, etc...etc...there are a plethora of family activities to keep you warm and occupied over the coming months. Here are some of my favorites:
Mont Tremblant: situated an hour and forty minutes from Montreal this world class ski resort has so much going on you don't have to ski to enjoy yourself. Go for a weekend, or even just the day and you won't be disappointed! www.tremblant.ca
Chateau Montebello: for an elegant getaway its hard to beat the convenience and rustic luxury of the Chateau Montebello. Nestled along the banks of the Ottawa river, built in the 1930s, it remains the world's largest log structure. For decades it was the vacation destination of choice of upper crust Canadians, as the photos in the stunning multi-story lobby will show you. Its only one hour and twenty minutes from Montreal by car. Check it out! www.fairmont.com/montebello
Snow village: For something the whole family can enjoy without having to leave the city its hard to beat a visit to Canada's only snow village. More like an ice hotel complex this impressive structure is a fully functioning hotel made of ice. Cool! www.snowvillagecanada.com
